BROMLEY SCHOOLS SPORTS PARTNERSHIP
BROMLEY SCHOOL SPORTS PARTNERSHIP
Bromley LA were successful in gaining DfES funding for two school sports partnerships (SSPs) which began in September 2005. The West Partnership is based at Kelsey Park Sports College and the Partnership Development Manager is Mike Vollar and the East Partnership is based at The Priory School and the Partnership Development Manager is Chris Caws. All primary, secondary and special schools in the borough are aligned within a partnership . Each year the Partnership organises a huge variety of opportunities for young people to participate in different sports and physical activity as well as borough competitions and festivals for pupils ranging from reception to year 13.
The Vision
The partnership’s vision continues to be to provide high quality opportunities for physical activity within and beyond the curriculum for all young people in Bromley with an emphasis on fitness and health, competitive and non-competitive activity for life long learning.
The SSPs work to the Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) that was launched in January 2008. The strategy is the joint overall responsibility of, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), working in particular with the Department for Universities, Innovation and Skills (DIUS) in relation to 16-19 year olds and with strong links to Department of Health. This has 10 work strands:
- Coaching
- Club links
- Competition
- Continuing Professional Development
- Disability
- Extending Activity
- Gifted and Talented
- Infrastructure
- Leadership and Volunteering
- Swimming
The Aim
The aim is for all schools in Bromley to meet the Governments Physical/Sports Activites (PSA) target that by 2011, all children will be offered at least five hours of sport every week (known as the five hour offer) made up of:
- At least two hours of high quality PE and sport at schools for all 5 - 16 year olds — with the expectation that this will be delivered totally within the curriculum.
- An additional 3 hours of sporting opportunity for all 5 - 19 year olds beyond the school day. This can be delivered on a school site or within the community. Schools are responsible for ensuring that they provide at least an extra hour of PE and sport on the school site (either before school, lunchtime or after school) in a typical week
From the 2008/9 data Bromley has 53% of young people from 5 - 19 year olds taking part in 3hours of PE and sport on a school site each week.
