GLL is an innovative staff led ’leisure trust’, with a social enterprise structure. They manage over 65 leisure centres within the M25 area - including Crystal Palace National Sport Centre in Bromley. Since taking over the responsibility for the National Sports Centre, the London Development Agency and GLL have already invested significantly in to the Centre:

  • Refurbished dance studio
  • New main entrance and reception area
  • North balcony sports arena re-surfaced
  • Accommodation for those with disabilities
  • A new leisure college delivering vocational and academic courses

The 50m Pool, Teaching Pool, Diving Pool, Arena, North Balcony, Rascals and Squash Courts have just benefited from major refurbishment of the centre's mechanical and electrical services.

"The NSC is a large facility - well over three times the size of most local sports centres - and its listed status also means that it must be treated with particular care. These works were completed in early 2009 and the Centre was re-opened in April 2009, we are now hoping to see Crystal Palace once again take its place as a major centre for sport in London."

Crystal Palace Beacon Swimming Programme

The ASA are setting up a number of Beacon Training Centres around the regions, specifically to provide its athletes the opportunities to develop from learn to swim through to performance, whilst also allowing swimmers who do not wish to commit to the performance pathway to progress at their own pace.

The programme will include the aquatic disciplines of:

  • Swimming
  • Water Polo (Water Polo Academy)
  • Masters
  • Competitive Disability Swimming
  • Triathlon
  • Modern Pentathlon

Until now, English swimming programmes have been many and varied, lead mainly by the support given in each region. This has led to inconsistencies in the opportunities available to athletes and coaches at local and regional level.

The Crystal Palace Beacon initiative aims to address the inconsistencies by enhancing support to the regional and surrounding clubs and particularly the network of clubs embracing the 'beacon programme' concept by providing a training programme using a full range of land and pool facilities and sports science in a single location.

Check out the CPNSC website for full details on the programme
